During our latest trip to the Pyrénées, I took the kids skiing for a day at Saint-Lary-Soulan. Having skied for many years in California’s Lake Tahoe area, one of the nice things about the Pyrénées is that the cost of lift tickets and equipment rental is much more reasonable.
For instance, an adult lift ticket is about $50. On our way from Aulon to Saint Lary, we stopped at Kangri Sports to rent skis and boots for the kids for about $30 for the day.
Saint-Lary-Soulan is a solid, medium-sized station with 100 km of slopes and thirty ski lifts. We had beautiful weather, and overall it was perfect conditions.

The one complaint is that there is a lot of traversing and not as much open skiing as I’d prefer. In part, I think that’s because we didn’t know the terrain well. As a result, the last run of the day was an one-long traverse to get the bottom along a narrow piste that was quite precarious at times and exhausting.

Still, when we did find some open runs, Saint-Lary-Soulan was great. And I’d definitely go back for a day trip.
